The only way that I have succesfully got the list to sort was to pull the battery and then set it again. Once done, the list sorted.
I have not seen a way to do the sort without doing this. They are listed alphabetically by first name some aren't even the users real names or associated contact name. Multiple conversations are listed oldest with the oldest or first conversation started at the top - newest at the bottom. I don't think there is a way to sort the items. They appear to be alphabetical by default in the contacts area below the current conversations group. If you need to quickly find a contact, just start typing the name while at the contact list for blackberry messenger.
