Windows 2003 folder permissions not propagating

Come for the solution, stay for everything else. Welcome to our community! I recently applied SP2 to a Windows Standard server. I have folders setup on a schedule to receive files from an ftp server. The folders have special permissions which were propagating to the files correctly before installing SP2. Now the files are not receiving these permissions unless I manually propagate the permissions to the child objects.

As soon as a new file is placed in the folder it has the default permissions again. Michael Pfister. Join our community to see this answer! Unlock 1 Answer and 5 Comments. If you add permissions on a folder to allow a new group to access a folder, these permissions are applied to all subfolders and files in the folder, meaning the additional group is granted access.

Inheritance is automatic. If you do not want the permissions of subfolders and files within folders to supplement or replace existing permissions, you must override inheritance starting with the top-level folder from which the permissions are inherited. A top-level folder is referred to as a parent folder. Files and folders below the parent folder are referred to as child files and folders. If a permission you want to change is shaded, the file or folder is inheriting the permission from a parent folder.

To change the permission, you must do one of the following:. These changes will then be inherited by child folders and files. In most cases, Deny overrides Allow, so if you explicitly deny permission to a user or group for a child folder or file, this permission should be denied to that user or group of users.

To stop inheriting permissions from a parent folder, right-click the file or folder in Windows Explorer, and then select Properties. In the Security tab of the Properties dialog box, click Advanced to display the Advanced Security Settings dialog box shown in Figure Allow inheritable permissions from the parent to propagate to this object and all child objects. Any help would be appreciated. In 'Advanced Security' - if you double click one of the permissions that is not propagating down, you get the 'Permission Entry' properties form.

If this box is ticked, it stops the permission propagating more than one layer down the tree. This overrides the 'Apply To This folder, subfolders.. As a result, on sub-folders, the 'Apply To' box sets itself to 'This folder' and greys itself out, and the permission in question doesn't inherit any further. This kind of issue may occur if "Apply onto" and "inheritable permissions" are not correct or incorrect operations.

I suggest you double check the "Apply onto" and "Allow inheritable permissions" to make sure they are configured correctly. Meanwhile, you can create a new folder on E drive to test if the permissions can be inherited. If so, move the files from the problem folder to the new folder.

In addition, "cacls" command can collect a log file for research. Use the same method to collect a log to a folder which permission has been propagate successfully. Then, compare the two logs. I do not believe you provided an answer that was satasfactory so I unmarked your answer as the correct one. The root permissions are setup correctly as can be seen from the screen shots.

You can also get an idea of the correct folder structure as shown by the cacls command. When you change it from This folder to This folder and Sub folders , does it retain the settings? Also, you're stating "Share Permissions. Sometimes, if having issues such as this, it's easier to simply create another folder with the correct permissions and move not copy the items from the old to the new.

Moving it will pickup the target's permissions. I cannot change it from This folder to This folder and sub folders. All options are greyed out like they were inherited. I'm sorry about that. You're completely correct that I'm using the wrong termonology. I do mean NTFS permissions. Sorry about that. I should know better. As far as the System FC, I'm not sure why it was removed from this environment and that was prior to my arrival. It seems like it was removed from all folders though and not just this one.

However this one is the only one that has the issue. Thanks for the hint of moving. I think I'll need to remake the entire folder and luckly it is only affecting only one share's NTFS permissions.
